So I reduced particle/voxel count by a factor of 10 in order to search at kilohertz frequencies, and sure enough: found this interlocking honeycomb in a couple minutes. Seems I'll have to work in small, high speed worlds if I want to find crystals. Still no 3d lattices but it's a start
